Festive Reception at the New Club
discourse by Mr James Naughtie, followed by wine and canapés
10 December 2014 (Wed) - 18:30-20:30

The Jubilee Stained Glass Window commemorates The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
To celebrate the Christmas season EDFAS invites members to a reception in The New Club, a private members' club founded in 1789, situated at No. 86 Princes Street, Edinburgh.
James Naughtie has kindly agreed to give a short talk at our Festive Reception. Many of us have woken up to his mellifluous tones since he became one of the main presenters of the Today Programme in 1994. He has been Chief Political Correspondent for The Scotsman and The Guardian, moving to radio presenting in 1988, since when, in addition to politics and current affairs, he has presented some of the televised Proms, various opera programmes and is the current host of Radio 4's Bookclub. His list of interviewees is legendary and he has covered events and conflicts all over the world. We are delighted that he is coming to share some of his stories with us.
The evening will begin with a talk in the library, followed by wine and canapés overlooking the magnificent Edinburgh skyline and the spectacular Christmas lights. There are 100 places available. Tickets priced at £18 per head are offered to members only at this stage and will be allotted on a first come, first served basis. Guests may be invited if any spaces remain after 20th November.

Upstairs at the Physicians Hall
A look at some less familiar parts of our regular lecture venue
20 January 2015 (Tue) or 21 January 2015 (Wed) - 10:30-12:00

Members will be aware that the Queen Mother Conference Centre at the Royal College of Physicians is to undergo a major refurbishment in 2016. Some members may never have had the chance to visit the upper reaches of the College, in spite of attending our regular lectures in the auditorium.
We are delighted that Iain Milne, Sibbald Librarian of the College, has agreed to conduct a winter visit to the home of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh to learn about the College and its history. Three centuries will be represented in a tour of buildings designed by Robert Adam, Thomas Hamilton and David Bryce. There will also be a chance to view and hear about some treasures from the splendid College Library. The College Collection contains over 50,000 printed books, many unique manuscripts and includes not only medical books but many fascinating works on botany, science and travel.
We will be provided with coffee on arrival and will have a short talk and guided tour of the building. The visit will last approximately two hours.
Tickets priced at £12 per head are offered to members only at this stage. If the event is oversubscribed a ballot will be held on 12th December.
